P.S.

  • Please forgive me if your views differ from that of mine.
  • Also, please forgive me for a post so late,  but even I don’t know what I was busy doing for the last five months.
  • Don’t indulge in any project kind of activity in IIT, unless there are big benifits, the hostel is so boring in holidays.

So, here I go.

Today I was on my way back to the hostel with a 4th yearite, talking to him  about placements, nothing different from what any curious 2nd yearite will do. I was wondering why people come to IIT (I came too), for a mere job, that too with almost no correlation to what he has done in the 4 years of his IIT life. Some may interpret it as the innovation of IITians, I don’t. Some of you might wonder why I am criticizing a thing that probably I will also do in my future, but that is not criticism, it is a big issue as to why are we not doing what we are supposed to do. Is everything going in vain?

I agree to all arguments that any work that we do adds a lot to our knowledge as well as experience and that it is only the IITians who have taken IITs to where they stand, but, the point is, what we study in our core courses must have, at least, some relevance to our future work. Some courses do have, I agree, but most of them are totally irrelevant. Let’s consider a textile engineer or a civil engineer who is doing some consultancy job or is a business research analyst at some financial firm, what do his core courses have to do with that. I am unable to find an answer to this question.

These statements do not indicate my frustration towards IIT, not at all. I am fairly satisfied with IIT and the facilities here although I may differ with many in this opinion of mine. The environment, exposure and interaction that an IITian gets is simply inimitable and the living conditions are bad for the good of students. We are supposed to be the innovators of India. Everyone knows, at least each one of us that we(excluding some ‘********’) are not interested in lectures and even labs for that matter and we have to go to the lectures  just for attendance, making notes=>good CGPA=>good job. But being involved in all this hassle, we miss out on one thing, knowledge. Gaining knowledge is simply not there in our list of objectives, which is supposed to be. In the lectures, the professor just teaches what he is expected to with no involvement of students in the class.

during class hours.......not the same always:)

Some of us are also  involved in politics, that too with the same goal, a good job, although some people have the objective of financial gains while in IIT, I am not one of them :P .  All these things supposedly help us in learning management and leadership skills, which probably is absent in case of others.  Otherwise too, there are a hell lot of things we learn while in IIT(poltu time, in maintaining attendance, bcd[do fill in the blanks],………).

But, even after all of this, the question remains unanswered. Do you have any answers?

P.S.:- (earlier one was pre-script :P )

  • After the brain wash I had today, it was inevitable for me to keep my feelings within myself.
  • The Story of SRP3 has few chapters remaining, will write soon.
  • Again, leave comments. :)
  • For girls of the department, please calm down. Let others relax.

Hi Sachin,

I think you have written some bare truth which everybody knows and understand but no one reveals and accept it.
IItians should go for the core work, they are expected to go for R&D but today people rarely interested for that.
if i think why people are not interested in that kind of work the only thing comes in my mind is lack of patience and lack of money.Greed of money has ruined the innovative minds.
IIT should promote and encourage students to join to more R&D side.

perhaps fault lies both in us and the administration. Just count how many core companies come to IIT for placements. I think they are rare. When we choose our branches at the time of JEE, no one chooses Textile for the reason that he wants to work in some textile firm in future. However, many take Civil as they have an interest in it. But the bottomline remains that branches are distributed irrepective of the individual interests and respective of the fact that it is after all IIT Delhi !!

I think is someone muggs up for four years his core subjects and then he sits for some consultancies or banking firms, his four years haven’t gone waste. Companies acknowledge that the person has excelled in his field of studies and maintained his position in IIT, so he is more than capable of handling the management in their company as well. Most of the Top consultancies and banks of the world would stop working if they recruit average commerce students from average universities.

How many of young students become the Topper of Economics at SRCC or St. Stephens. But whosoever becomes, gets paid in lakhs outside India.

An average IITian is equivalent to a DU Topper I suppose. Not in terms of knowledge, but in view of potential. Companies are looking for potential leaders of Corporate World.

Nice Post, write more on general topics.

@Kajli di
Agreed that greed of money is bad but who would like to go for R&D for half a salary package. It is also the R&D companies who are to be blamed and yes, IIT should encourage us, but by what means, I don’t know.

@Snehil
I agree, but basic thing was about the core courses. I agree that we possess the potential, but, I think that by doing this, aren’t we making a wastage of resourses?

@snehilbasoy ” An average IITian is equivalent to a DU Topper I suppose….. ”

Everyone is equallly potential in doing anything if he/she just try to to do so …. can u count any sucessful businessman/actor/singer etc who are from IIT. i have seen lots of ppls who are just BA/B Com but are suceesful in their own feild.

IITiens do MBA or IAS/PCS preparation after doing hell of hard work in cracking the entrance & in college.

IITiens are now greedy about MNCs.. notng else
